Denham Clements has an unusual history for a photorealistic painter, and is enjoying and even more unusual success. His work has been included in exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, the Albuquerque Museum, US Ambassador's Residence, Lima, Peru, the Tucson Museum of Art, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, as well as collections throughout the US and abroad.
Shaman’s Enigma
As a photorealist, I am inclined to be precise in my planning and execution. The words “loosening up” are seldomly spoken. But with this piece, I permitted each inspiration to occur on its own. After stretching a black canvas the initial inspiration was for clouds, first on top, then on the bottom; as the areas began to merge a circle formed. Puzzled by the process, I allowed portions of a face to assemble within the circle with certain pieces taking the form of butterflies, only to become whole and vibrant as they escaped the confines of the ellipse. The viewer is tasked with the interpretation.
