Taos Deputy
Long a well-recognized Taoseno, by the late 1970’s Doncito Martinez had become iconic. Rumor had it that he was the inspiration for the character, Amarante Cordova, in John Nichols’s book, “Milagro Beanfield War”, Doncito’s signature accessory was his Taos Deputy badge, always proudly displayed on his lapel. During “Fiestas” Doncito was often found playing his squeeze-box, center stage at the plaza gazebo, adding a classic uniqueness to the annual northern New Mexico festivity.
